Two workers suffered burns after a metal smelting and refining facility’s furnace exploded Wednesday in Sipi Metals in Chicago’s Goose Island neighborhood.
The furnace used to melt metals exploded around 12:15 p.m., officials said.
“They were doing what they do every day, but for some reason there was a reaction to some chemical,” said Dep. Dist. Chief John Giordano. “It could have been something they were processing.”
The injured workers were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and were in serious to critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department at 1:05 p.m.
The fire department issued a hazardous materials response as a precaution, but it was later secured.
In July 2010, there was another explosion recorded in OSHA records. In that case, there appeared to be no injuries but the 100,000 square foot Sipi was fined $3,500.
