A boiler explosion caused damage to a steam plant in western Michigan on Christmas Day.
The blast occurred late on Christmas night at Veolia Energy in downtown Grand Rapids, MI. Several windows in the facility ended up blown out in the blast.
Firefighters said the boiler malfunctioned which resulted in the explosion. A plant employee was uninjured, but taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
The plant produces steam which heats and cools about 130 buildings in the city’s downtown area.
The plant’s “system is safe and reliable,” said Veolia general manager Perry Alburg.
The system was taken offline overnight, but was up and running the following day.
