At first it was a simple brush fire, but it quickly turned into a hazardous materials incident.
The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the hills near CSU Channel Islands in Camarillo, CA, fire officials said. It was reported at 3:20 p.m. near Potrero and Old Hueneme roads.
It was thought to be a brush fire, and crews approaching the scene reported smoke along the ridge. Bulldozers, ground crews and helicopters were requested.
The fire was reported to be out by the time crews got there.
But then things changed as a pallet half full of elemental sulfur caught fire, authorities said.
The chemical was being used to clean a pond at a nearby ranch. That is when additional hazardous material crews were requested to assist cleaning up the chemicals.
