The “Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) in Semaphore’s Kingfisher RTU” brief describes how VRRP eliminates a single point of failure in an industrial network.
The Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is a broadcast and election protocol that provides redundancy between network routers. Using this protocol, multiple network routers may have availability and priority of a single network router to respond to one or more IP addresses. Where a network router with a higher assigned priority for VRRP operations is present on the network, it may announce its presence and subsequently configure and respond to the one or more IP addresses associated with VRRP operations. In this manner, multiple network routers can provide network services, such as the selective redirection or re-transmission of communications between network segments, associated with one or more IP addresses.
