Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA reported a fire that led to a unit shutdown over the weekend at its refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.
“An unanticipated fire at Unit 836 resulted in a unit upset,” the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
“Loss of containment was sounded, the fire brigade responded, the fire was extinguished, and Unit 836 was shut down.”
The problems also led to above-normal emissions of sulfur dioxide that began Sunday morning and lasted about three hours, the company said.
The 225,000-barrel-a-day refinery is located 95 miles east of Houston.
