A wireless noise dosimeter, developed by Casella, gained Intrinsic Safety certification for use in industries that operate in highly explosive environments, including the oil and gas, chemical and other sectors.

“This introduction speaks to our continued commitment to deliver monitoring devices that get the job done for those working in the most demanding environments,” said Rob Brauch, Business Unit Manager of Casella CEL Inc. “Features such as Boothtooth 4.0 and our Airwave mobile app make the dBadge2 a must-have safety tool for those working in extreme environments.”

Unlike typical noise monitoring devices, the new Casella dBadge2 is designed for use in explosive environments and is certified Intrinsically Safe — incapable of igniting an explosion even under fault conditions. It is certified for Class I, Zone 0 hazardous locations, where high concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or dusts are present continuously or for long periods of time under normal operating conditions.

This approval establishes Casella as the first company to achieve intrinsic safety certifications on a wireless personal noise dosimeter. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, the dBadge2 lets users wirelessly control multiple dBadge2 units from distances of up to 100 or more feet away — including starting, pausing or stopping noise sampling — even without a clear line of sight between devices.

Cyber Security

They can then transmit real-time noise exposure data via their IS approved mobile devices from the most hazardous zones of their operations to off-site managers, thus enhancing productivity while lowering risk. The dBadge2 provides the detail needed to measure hazardous location noise environments and prescribe best practice solutions for preservation of hearing health, all without interrupting the employee or overall workflow.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports more than 20,000 workplace hearing loss cases annually, many resulting in permanent hearing loss that neither surgery nor a hearing aid can correct. This danger is especially pronounced in hazardous locations where very noisy processes are common. The shoulder mounted, cable-free dBadge2 captures every metric needed to satisfy noise exposure regulatory requirements globally, while dramatically reducing the time and costs typically associated with personal noise monitoring.

The dBadge2 weighs only 4 ounces, and measures 3.3″ (L) x 2.1 (W) x 2.1 (H) inches. Reliability and a long service life are assured by a newly-reinforced, rugged case sealed against the elements and featuring an ambient temperature range of -20° C to +45° C (-20° F to 113° F). Other features include:
• Limitless ‘virtual’ dosimeters
• Full color display with large font for distance viewing
• Motion sensor records that device was worn
• 1 second time history profiling
• Pause function
• Recording of audio events (optional)
• Octave band frequency analysis (optional)
• Updated & Simplified Casella Insight Plug-in with advanced noise analysis features
