A silo containing liquid asphalt exploded at a plant early Thursday morning in Leesburg, FL, and the boom could be heard from miles away.
The blast occurred in the 1200 block of Commerce Street at D.A.B. Constructors.
An employee was beginning operations at the plant when a silo containing liquid asphalt exploded, officials said.
“It is apparent that a valve malfunctioned on one their hoppers and an explosion resulted,” the Leesburg Police Department said.
The employee was not seriously injured and was treated at the scene.
As a result of the blast, metal was thrown all over the facility. Crews spent the morning peeling dangling metal off the silos and beginning cleanup efforts.
