Giving as much advanced notice as possible, ExxonMobil said flaring would be noticeable for several hours Thursday night due to maintenance at the Beaumont, TX, refinery.
The oil and gas giant said the process of safely flaring is an environmentally approved measure and is used to burn hydrocarbons that cannot be processed during a unit shutdown.
This is necessary so personnel can safely work on equipment, according to an ExxonMobil Facebook post.
The company said its top priority is the safety of its employees and the community during maintenance activities.
The post said the company has “taken steps to ensure that good emission control practices are implemented” during the process.
