Columbia Gas of Virginia is working to restore service to customers in Chatham and Tightsqueeze.
The company said nearly 300 customers lost natural gas service.
Crews responded to an odor call Saturday night, which required them to shut down the section of the distribution system serving customers in Chatham and Tightsqueeze, VA.
Columbia Gas said evacuated residents returned to their homes later on.
Twelve homes ended up evacuated as a precaution and there were no reports of injuries or sicknesses.
Crews worked overnight to make repairs and restore natural gas service to customers.
The cause of the gas leak remains under investigation.
