A piping connection leak caused over 10,000 gallons of a mixture of oil and produced water to spill at a well site in McKenzie County, ND, state officials said.
The incident occurred Tuesday at a site about 10 miles southeast of Keene, said officials at the state’s Oil and Gas Division.
More than 9,500 gallons of the mixture ended up recovered, officials said. Clean-up efforts are ongoing as state inspectors are at the site monitoring the progress.
Produced water is a mixture of saltwater and oil and can contain drilling chemicals.
Hess Bakken Investments II operates the site. The company said the spill did not threaten any waterways.
