A paper dust fire broke out inside a Putney, VT, paper mill Thursday with workers inside when flames first erupted.
The Putney Fire Department responded at 5 p.m. to an active fire at Soundview Paper Co.
The facility manufacturers towel and tissue products.
At the time of the fire, first responders said workers were inside. The employees activated the alarm system manually.
It took about five hours to fully contain the fire, which fire officials said ended up started by paper dust from one of the mill’s machines.
“The machine had been running for 20 minutes when there was a dust explosion if you will. And then the fire extended from there,” said Putney Fire Chief Thomas Goddard.
There was a team effort involving first responders and mill employees that allowed crews to contain the fire without any injuries, Goddard said.
