A long-time worker with Atlantic Minerals died after an accident at the company’s limestone quarry in Lower Cove on the Port au Port Peninsula, which is on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland, Canada.
According to a press release issued by the company Tuesday afternoon, the man had been injured in an accident earlier in the day, but later died of those injuries.
Officials with Occupational Health and Safety and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are currently investigating the fatality.
Atlantic Minerals Limited said in a statement it is cooperating fully with both agencies.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of this long-term employee and we offer sincere condolences to his family and coworkers,” the release said.
Rob Kenny, the company’s human resources manager, said late Tuesday afternoon it was too early for the company to make any further comment about the man or what happened.
“It’s a really sensitive time right now and we really can’t say much more as we’re not sure all of the next of kin have been notified,” Kenny said.
