Power is back on at a South Carolina nuclear plant.
Duke Energy said power came back to the Catawba Nuclear Station Thursday. Generators had been running the plant since the day before, when the plant near York, SC, about 18 miles south of Charlotte, NC, lost offsite power. One of the plant’s two units was already down for an outage. The other unit automatically shut down after losing offsite power.
Federal regulators and power company officials are still trying to figure out what happened. Duke said steam releasing from the plant upon start up was not harmful or radioactive.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it is not planning to send an inspection team to the plant.
