A gas leak at the Defiance city wastewater treatment plant on Ohio 281 caused a brief building evacuation Thursday.
The leak from a chlorine tank’s hose ended up detected at 10:15 a.m., and triggered an alarm.
When an alarm occurs, the safety protocol calls for employees to evacuate the building, said city administrator Jeff Leonard.
“They had to shut the building down and evacuate the building and take the necessary precautions to ensure that it was safe,” he said.
The protocol is part of the city’s risk management plan.
The city fire department responded to the scene as well as the county’s HazMat team, but things were back to normal by 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Chlorine is part of the plant’s treatment process.
