A caustic substance spill at a Newbury Park, CA, biopharmaceutical facility Sunday evening sent a woman to the hospital.
The incident occurred at 6:48 p.m. at a facility historically used to make drugs for rare illnesses at 1700 Rancho Conejo Boulevard, said officials at the Ventura County Fire Department.
During Sunday’s incident, a woman went to the hospital and underwent emergency decontamination procedures after an estimated liter of sodium hydroxide spilled on her, according to firefighters at the scene.
Although she was not displaying symptoms, firefighters said she would be transported to a hospital. At 7:30 p.m., she had been cleared for transport to Los Robles Regional Medical Center.
Crews said a leak had spilled up to 400 liters of sodium hydroxide at the site. Hazardous materials teams were called to the scene.
Shortly after 8 p.m., firefighters said the scene was contained.
