Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant restarted and returned to full power early this week after the unit shut down after a cooling water issue, Xcel Energy officials said.

Automated safety protocols took the Monticello, MN-based unit offline as a safety precaution last week after a cooling water recirculation pump stopped, said Colleen Mahoney, Xcel Energy’s national media relations representative.

After a thorough investigation, plant operators determined the recirculation pump’s voltage regulating circuitry caused it to stop.

Crews have repaired the pump and it is back in service, Mahoney said.

Operators were also able to complete other maintenance on the unit that could not occur while at full power.
